How to translate a PDF
1. Import your PDF
Open a document in the editor and choose the pages you want to translate. Try a representative page first.
2. Choose a language
Use Text Layer for selectable PDF text or Visual AI for scans and illustrated pages. Check the estimate before starting.
3. Review and edit
Compare the result with your source. Correct wording and check line breaks, tables, numbers, and diagram labels.
4. Download your PDF
Export the reviewed pages. Text Layer supports selectable PDF text; visual translations retain the page as an image.

PDFs with selectable text
For reports, books, and documents with a usable text layer, Text Layer translates the extracted text in its page positions. Edit the text and placement before exporting a selectable PDF. Check reading order on pages with multiple columns.
Scanned PDFs and illustrated pages
Visual AI translates text embedded in scans, diagrams, and artwork. Optional cleanup can improve a poor scan. The result still needs review, especially small labels and dense tables.
Explore scanned PDF translationKeep the document useful in another language
A translation should remain understandable in context: captions beside their images, instructions beside their diagrams, and text inside its page structure. Longer translations can require layout adjustments. Review a sample before processing a whole document. Safety instructions and other consequential content need qualified review.
PDF translation questions
Can I translate a PDF without losing its formatting?
PixLate translates text within the page layout and keeps the original images visible. Use Text Layer for selectable text and Visual AI for scanned or illustrated pages. Review line breaks, tables, and labels before export: translated text can take more space than the original.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages can use Visual AI to translate text inside the page image. Optional cleanup can improve a faded or noisy scan. Missing or illegible text still needs a better source or manual correction.
Can I edit the translation and download a PDF?
Yes. Review the translated pages in the editor and correct the result before export. Text Layer supports editable text and selectable PDF output. Visual AI produces image-based results that can be exported as a PDF or images.
Is PDF translation free?
New accounts receive free pages to try PixLate, with no credit card required. Further AI processing uses prepaid credits. Check the estimate before starting; cost depends on the workflow and selected pages. See pricing for the current offer.
Which files can I import?
PixLate supports PDF, JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Export Word or PowerPoint documents to PDF before importing. Start with a representative page to check the result before translating a larger document.
Where are my documents processed?
Projects are saved on your device by default. AI operations send selected content for processing. Text Layer translation sends extracted text and page geometry; preparing its native preview or selectable PDF can send the source PDF for rendering. Local project storage does not mean all processing is offline.
